Boracay still named among best islands in Asia despite closure

MANILA – Despite of its closure since April, Boracay has maintained a spot in Travel + Leisure magazine’s list of Top 10 islands in Asia.

It landed the No. 8 spot this year, getting a score of 86.14.

Two other Philippine destinations made the cut – Cebu made it to sixth place with a score of 89.10, while Palawan, after two years of winning the No. 1 spot, finished at No. 5 with 90.04.

At the top spot is Java in Indonesia, which also dominated Travel + Leisure magazine’s world’s best islands list.

Korea Visa application in PH now only through travel agencies

MANILA – Starting July 1, 2018, Filipinos who wish to travel to South Korea may apply for a visa only through travel agencies, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Philippines announced Tuesday.

According to the Korean Embassy, the new policy will be implemented due to the big increase in Korean visa applicants.

“Total number of visa applicants increased from 90,000 in the year 2015 to 120,000 by the end of 2016. In the year 2017, total number of visa applicants recorded was around 160,000,” the embassy said.

The increase in number of visa applicants caused inconvenience to the applicants.

“This increase in number of visa applicants caused the applicants to stand in hot weather outside the embassy for hours to wait in line for their turn to apply for respective visas,” the embassy said.

The embassy has designated the following travel agencies to process temporary visitor’s visa application:

From July 1, all walk-in applicants for temporary visitor’s visa will no longer be accepted.

The embassy, however, will allow walk-in applicants for the following:

– spouses and children of Koreans,
– holders of visa issuance number,
– government employees with official business trip, and
– those with humanitarian reason to travel to Korea urgently.

Philippines: Expect heavy rainfall in Luzon due to passage of Tropical Depression Maring

Manila, Philippines – 12 areas in Luzon including the capital Manila were placed under signal number 1 as Tropical Depression Maring heads to the east of Infanta, Quezon.

The tropical depression continues to have maximum winds of 45 km/h and gustiness of up to 60 km/h.

Signal number 1 is raised in the following areas:

  • Metro Manila
  • Catanduanes
  • Camarines Norte
  • Camarines Sur
  • Northern Quezon including Polillo Island
  • Rizal
  • Bulacan
  • Pampanga
  • Quirino
  • Nueva Ecija
  • Tarlac
  • Aurora

Meanwhile, at 3:00 PM today, the eye of Typhoon “Lannie” was located in the East of Aparri, Cagayan.

Travelers in Luzon should expect heavy rainfall and associated disruption in the coming days.
